Wanderers defender steps away from football to pursue alternative career

Western Sydney Wanderers have confirmed defender Gabriel Cleur has left the club in order to pursue a career away from football.

Joining the Wanderers in 2022, the full back went on to feature 60 times for his local club but has now made the decision to step away from professional football in order to further pursue his education and focus on his future career as a psychologist.

“Gab has shown great maturity in making a decision that prioritises his long-term future,” said Western Sydney Wanderers CEO Scott Hudson.

“Not every football journey follows the same path, and we respect Gab’s choice to focus on his education and family while reflecting positively on the time he spent with our club.

“He represented the Wanderers with professionalism and dedication, and we thank him for his contribution to the Red & Black.” 

Wanderers head coach Alen Stajcic acknowledged Cleaur’s time at the club and praised both the player and the person.

“In the last 18 months Gab has been a fantastic contributor to our team, demonstrating high levels of intense constant effort, discipline and hard work,” said Stajcic.

“Gab is a wonderful human being, and I wish him and his family all the best in his future”

An Australian youth international, Cleur previously had spells playing for Italian sides Alessandria and Virtus Entella before returning to the Isuzu UTE A-League and his local club, the Wanderers.

“As a Western Sydney boy, I am honoured and proud to have been given the opportunity to play for my club,” said Cleur.

“The Western Sydney Wanderers will always be special to me in my heart. I am blessed to have worked with so many incredible people – players, coaching staff, and office staff alike, and I will cherish the many memories I have made alongside everyone at the club.

“I am thankful to God for the time I have spent here, and I wish everyone all the best for the future.

“This was a carefully considered decision to focus on my future as a psychologist and prioritise family life.”
