Brendan Hamill has lit the fuse for this weekend’s Sydney Derby with the Wanderers defender suggesting his side enjoyed ending Sydney FC’s unbeaten run last season.
Sydney FC dominated the Hyundai A-League in 2016/17, securing the Premiership and Championship double in impressive fashion.
But the one blight on the Sky Blues’ season was a round 20 loss to the Wanderers, with Brendon Santalab’s strike ending their hopes of an unbeaten campaign.
“It was good for us to make sure that they didn’t get that undefeated run,” Hamill told reporters on Wednesday.
“I don’t think they deserved it to be honest.”
Adding to the derby spice, Hamill suggested the Wanderers faithful will ensure that the game at Allianz Stadium will ostensibly be a home game for the Red and Black.
“It’s a home game for sure. [Our fans] are so passionate and they are so loud,” Hamill said.
“It’s pretty much 60% red and 40% blue whenever you go play at Allianz, they’re magnificent and they’re our 13th man.”
“We expect a lot of noise and a packed out stadium at Allianz.”
Both sides remain unbeaten after two rounds and Hamill admitted the magnitude of this fixture was not lost on the players.
“They [Sydney FC] probably think they’re invincible but they’re not,” Hamill said.
“It’s a big game for the club, a big game for the Wanderers and a big game for the players. A Derby is a Derby and that’s the best way to explain it.
“There’s a lot of pride on the line for who takes the bragging rights for the first Derby and we want to do that.”
