Wanderers coach sees big picture and asks for patience after derby loss

Western Sydney Wanderers FC coach Josep Gombau believes success is cyclical in the Hyundai A-League.

Speaking after another Sydney Derby loss to the Sky Blues, the Spaniard pointed to his time at Adelaide United as an example of the cycles of success in the league.

“Things can change quickly. There are cycles in football,” he told Fox Sports.

“Two years ago I came here with Adelaide United and Sydney FC was not the same side as they are now.

“And we [Wanderers] are in a good way.

“We are very clear on what we need to do and we are working for sure.

“There are cycles and sometimes teams are high on the table and doing well and after that it can change.

“I think we have a very  clear idea of what we need to do and it is something we will do.”

Sunday’s 3-1 loss meant since Gombau became Wanderers coach, the club has won just five of its 14 games (W5, D3, L6).

That said, the red and black are in sixth spot on the ladder, four points clear of Brisbane Roar FC, and are on track for a finals place.

As for Sunday’s derby, Gombau pointed to his players’ mentality after Sydney FC  equalised on the stroke of half time.

“We started well and we scored but this goal [to Sydney FC] before half time mentally affected us as we were winning, then in the last moment of the first half we conceded this goal,” he said.

“We started well in the second half but the second goal also was difficult for us.

“We tried but they [Sydney FC] are a very good side and they won.”
