Western Sydney Wanderers manager Josep Gombau insists he was encouraged by what he saw in his side’s 2-0 loss away to Adelaide United.
On his return to Coopers Stadium, the former Reds boss was hampered by Robbie Cornthwaite’s early sending off as Ryan Kitto’s two goals left the visitors with a lone victory from their opening seven games.
Gombau expects it will take time to implement his philosophy.
“For the first 20 or 30 minutes when we had 10 men we sat too deep. We were giving the ball to Adelaide United and from there they created chances,” said the Spaniard, who was appointed earlier this month.
“But there are a lot of positive things. The second half for me was very good.
“I am happy and I take a lot of information that will make us better and better.
“We are trying to change a lot of things and it is normal that mistakes will come.”
Having coached Adelaide for two successful seasons during his first stint in Australia, Gombau admitted it felt unusual to return as the opposition manager.
“Always, always [it’s strange]. But a good feeling,” he said.
“The people have been friendly and I am so grateful to the people here and to the fans. And I will always be grateful to the club and to the city.”
