It has been an epic month for Brisbane Roar midfield dynamo Katrina Gorry, capped on Sunday with a player of the match showing in the top-of-the-table win over Canberra United.
The past four weeks have seen Gorry find the net in a win for the Westfield Matildas over China, and bag her maiden Westfield W-League hat-trick.
Long renowned as an all-action midfielder, the pocket-sized Queenslander seems to be improving with every outing and is rapidly becoming a key player for both club and country.
Her non-stop activity in the heart of the Brisbane engine room was pivotal in the Roar claiming a crucial 1-0 win in the nation-s capital on Sunday. It also was a slice of revenge for the Roar who slipped to a shock 3-0 defeat against the same opponent on the opening day of the season.
How was it to get a win over a team that beat you comfortably in the first round?
It was a great feeling. It was a very tough game, we thought they were maybe going to get one. Our defence was strong but it was an even game so we had a bit of luck.
There seemed to be a high intensity about the game yesterday especially early on…
Losing in the first game against Canberra a month ago gave us incentive to do better than that. And they wanted to show they could maintain what they showed in the first game. It could have gone either way to be honest.
And another outstanding performance for you against Canberra….
It could have gone to a few girls to be honest but I was lucky enough to pick up the award. The Westfield voucher is well timed for Christmas!
The Roar have a fantastic squad, you must be hopeful of going all the way this season?
I-m hoping we come home with the trophy. We have the girls to do that, so this could be our year. But the first game was a massive wake-up call. You can have a great team on paper, but you still have to go out and perform.
Your game seems to have come along significantly in the past year or two…
It is always good to play in the Matildas and at the Roar also and it has definitely boosted my confidence. Playing at the Roar with so many great players in the team has helped lift my game.
Your long-range shooting is a feature of your game, and you are getting into plenty of goalscoring positions…
I-m probably in more of an attacking role and (coach) Belinda (Wilson) has given us some attacking freedom so maybe that is helping me. The more I think about shooting the worse it gets, but I have been practising after training.
Who is the funniest person in the Roar team?
Nadine Angerer for sure. Though I-m not sure if she is funny because of the language barrier, or if she is actually funny in German as well!
Who is your favourite person?
I-ll say Kate Stewart seeing as she is walking past!
Who is the coolest person?
Amy Chapman.
Who is the daggiest person?
Kim Carroll…. umm, because she is a country girl!
