Vukovic hails Sky Blues’ character in comeback win

Sydney FC goalkeeper Danny Vukovic said his side’s ability to keep the ball in the second half was the reason for their big win over Perth Glory on Saturday night.

Despite falling behind to an Adam Taggart goal midway through the first half, the Sky Blues’ class showed as they stormed back to beat Glory 4-1 at nib Stadium.

Goals from skipper Alex Brosque, Filip Holosko, Bobo and Bernie Ibini ensured Graham Arnold’s side will sit seven points clear at the top of the Hyundai A-League ladder at Christmas.

“It’s very pleasing. Again we showed great character away from home and it’s a tough trip here over to Perth,” Vukovic told Fox Sports.

“We went 1-0 down but we hit back straight away which is brilliant.

Sydney FC players celebrate Alex Brosque's goal in their Round 11 win over Perth Glory.

“We just needed to keep the ball a bit better, that’s what Arnie said at half-time. We did that in the second half and we got a great result.”

Despite the ease of the victory on the scoreboard, Vukovic played a big part in the win, pulling off a couple of huge saves with the score at 2-1 in the second half.

“I was just doing my job,” the modest gloveman said.

“I put my hand up for the first one. I had a bad clearance which led to [Glory’s] goal. So it’s nice to contribute and help the team out in the end.

“It’s always nice [to beat my former club)…I was copping a bit of flak which is nice as well,” Vukovic added.

“But it’s always good to get wins away from home.”

And the Sky Blues are on the road again in Round 12, with a trip to Adelaide to play the last-placed Reds on Boxing Day.
