Melbourne Victory has confirmed that captain Carl Valeri has been cleared to return to playing and will join the travelling squad for Saturday’s match against Wellington Phoenix.
Valeri has recovered from an inflammatory condition affecting part of his brain, though it is unclear whether he will see game time in Wellington.
Two months ago, the club ruled Valeri out for the remainder of the season , but since then, he has progressed to a level where specialists and club doctors are comfortable he can return.
“Over the past six weeks, Carl has been able to return to training under close supervision, without any flare up of the inflammation or return of his symptoms,” said Victory club doctor Krishant Naidu.
“We will continue to closely monitor his progress, working with his neurologist.
“However, from a medical perspective, we are very comfortable with his recovery and we believe he is right to be available for selection.”
Valeri’s last Hyundai A-League appearance was in Round 8 against Adelaide United on November 28.
The 31-year-old said after months of slowly working his way back to full fitness, he was looking forward to playing a part in Victory’s finish to the current campaign.
“To think back a few months ago, we didn’t know what was going to happen,” Valeri said.
“To be in and amongst the boys, it’s a great feeling. I realise how much I missed it and how much it puts me in a positive mood off the park.
“I didn’t expect to play any part in this season, and now I’m here. I’m just working hard like I’ve always done. I just want to help the boys any chance I can get.
“They’re really a great bunch of guys and I thank them so much for their support. They’ve been fantastic throughout the whole process.”
