Victory sign Wesfield Matildas defender

Melbourne Victory have bolstered their squad for the upcoming Westfield W-League season with the signing of Matildas defender Laura Alleway on a two-year deal.

It will be the 27-year-old’s second stint with Victory after she was a member of the inaugural squad back in 2008.

“She’s a really dominant central defender who wins the ball and uses it really well,” Victory W-League coach Jeff Hopkins said of Alleway.

“One of the things we recognised last year was we needed someone in that position to really be dominant and organise people around the place.”

Laura Alleway celebrates a goal with Elise Kellond-Knight.

Alleway has experienced the ultimate W-League success with two teams during her 94-game career; firstly with Brisbane Roar in 2010/2011 before repeating the dose with City in 2015/2016 and 2016/2017.

In coaching Alleway at Roar, Hopkins understands what the defender is capable of.

“Once I knew she was maybe available, I jumped in as soon as I could to lock her down.”

“I know Laura’s qualities and she was out playing in Orlando. I’ve been watching a lot of the US games on a weekly basis and also the national teams with the Matildas.

“We’ll be bringing a lot of experience in around her as well.”
