Besart Berisha and Dylan McGowan both scored goals for their new clubs as Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United enjoyed big wins in pre-season friendly action on Tuesday night.
While the nation was gripped by Westfield FFA Cup fever, both Victory and Adelaide were involved in crucial hit-outs as they prepare for the new club season and their own Cup journeys.
At John Ilhan Memorial Reserve, the Victory scored three second half goals to run away with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over NPL side Hume City.
After going behind on the half hour, marquee-man Berisha hit back before the break after great lead-up play by Connor Pain.
It was all Victory in the second half with further goals to Gui Finkler, trialist George Howard and Archie Thompson in a seven-minute period completing the rout.
It was the same scoreline at Adelaide Shores Football Centre as the Reds warmed up for next week’s FFA Cup clash against Wellington with a strong display.
Coach Josep Gombau gave a youthful squad a hit-out against Adelaide Comets and they didn’t disappoint, dictating the pace of the game from the outset.
Youth-team player Bruce Kamau sent the Reds on their way on 16-minutes while a brace from new recruit McGowan either side of the break set up the win.
Anthony Costa also got on the scoresheet 10 minutes from time.
