Melbourne Victory have finished their National Youth League campaign with a crushing 4-0 win over Newcastle Jets at Epping Soccer Stadium on Saturday.
Having dominated possession throughout the opening stanza, the hosts took a deserved lead just before the break when Anthony Selemidis finished a sweeping movement with a clever finish from inside the penalty box.
Geoff Kellaway doubled his side’s advantage at the resumption after another solid build up from Mehmet Durakovic’s men.
The Englishman banged home his second midway through the second half to all but seal the win before Jade Nakic finished the romp with a goal in the dying minutes.
The win lifts the Victory off the bottom of the ladder and into eighth spot on 21 points, while the Jets hold onto seventh position despite the loss.
It was an unhappy finish to the Jets’ season as the visitors failed to ask any serious questions of the Victory defence and were out played in all facets in humid conditions.
Coach Durakovic was understandably delighted with his side’s final performance of the season.
“Everyone played well, it was a great team effort,” he enthused.
“It’s great to finish off the game today in such a good style, the boys played really, really well.”
“It was probably our best performance of the year, we had really young kids and it was a great way to finish.”
“At the end of the day we could have scored a few more but it’s a great way finish to the season.”
