Victory claims derby bragging rights

Melbourne Victory claimed derby bragging rights with a 2-0 win against Melbourne City in the Westfield W-League on Sunday.

Natasha Dowie opened the scoring inside the first minute at Epping Stadium before Victory captain Christine Nairn scored a stunner.

City had most of the possession throughout but struggled to create chances against its rivals, with Jess Fishlock missing a second-half penalty.

Victory made a dream start through Dowie. It took less than 30 seconds for the forward to open the scoring, cutting inside from the left before firing into the bottom corner.

City dominated possession for the rest of the half, but Victory doubled its lead just after the half-hour mark.

Nairn played a short corner before curling a brilliant effort into the top corner from 30 yards.

Fishlock went closest to pulling a goal back for City in the first half, her swerving effort hitting the post.

It was more of the same after the break, but Victory held firm as City struggled to create chances despite its possession.

Fishlock had an opportunity from the penalty spot in the 86th minute, only to fire wide.

Victory has a bye in Round 13, while City hosts Brisbane Roar on Sunday.
