Vargas given two-match ban

Melbourne Victory defender Rodrigo Vargas has received a two-match ban following his sending off in his side’s 3-2 defeat of Gold Coast United on Sunday.

Melbourne Victory defender Rodrigo Vargas has received a two-match ban following his sending off in his side-s 3-2 defeat of Gold Coast United on Sunday.

Vargas was shown a straight red card for his foul on Gold Coast striker Golgol Mebrahtu in the 32nd minute of the game at AAMI Park, and on Monday the independent Match Review Panel (MRP) found Vargas had committed serious foul play, resulting in a two-match suspension.

Melbourne Victory have until midday Tuesday to accept the charge or refer the charge to the FFA Disciplinary Committee in the hope the sanction is lessened. However, the last time Victory challenged an MRP ruling, for defender Matthew Foschini, the suspension was extended.

In another ruling from Hyundai A-League Week 8, the MRP also found Melbourne Heart midfielder Wayne Srhoj has a case to answer for after his raised elbow against Central Coast Mariners midfielder Rostyn Griffiths in the fifth minute on Saturday-s clash in Gosford.

Charged with serious foul play, Srhoj has been asked to lodge a submission in defence of his case before midday Tuesday.
