Central Coast goalkeeper Jess Vanstrattan is expected to miss the remainder of the Hyundai A-League season after suffering a serious knee injury at training on Friday afternoon.
The 28-year-old tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while completing a routine training drill on the eve of the Round 4 clash against Sydney FC at the SFS.
Vanstrattan, who suffered the same injury in his right knee five years ago, was attempting to stop a high ball but when he landed his knee simply gave way.
The mishap is a major blow for the Mariners, who lost Danny Vukovic at the end of last season.
Vukovic signed on with Wellington Phoenix on Monday after his three-year deal with Turkish club Konyaspor fell through.
Mariners assistant coach Phil Moss says the injury is a major blow for both player and club.
“It’s very disappointing for us and for Jess,” Moss told Sportal.
“But that’s football, there’s not much you can do.”
Asked who will take Vanstrattan’s place in the starting line-up on Saturday night, Moss revealed promising teenager Matt Ryan will be given his opportunity.
“Matt Ryan will come in,” Moss said.
“He’s 18 and a very good prospect, he’ll do a good job for us.”
“He had a few games in the pre-season and performed very well.”
Although the youngster may not get his chance after the Mariners signed experienced gloveman Paul Henderson on a six-week injury replacement deal.
The 34-year-old spent last season with the Fury and is looking forward to linking up with the Mariners.
“I got the call from Arnie pretty late on in the piece and it’s all been a bit of a rush, but I’m looking forward to catching up with a lot of familiar faces at the Mariners,” said Henderson.
“It’s disappointing to hear about an injury to any player so obviously I feel for Jess, and hopefully I can come in and help the Mariners as best I can.”
