Valuable Vidosic relishing new role at Melbourne City

An in-form Dario Vidosic says added responsibility at Melbourne City has unlocked his purple patch of performances in the Hyundai A-League.

The 30-year-old scored twice in a comprehensive 3-0 win over Newcastle Jets on Sunday to improve his tally to five goals in 12 appearances for the club he joined in December.

But with the likes Daniel Arzani and Bruno Fornaroli also patrolling the attack, Vidosic is gaining just as much enjoyment from the other side of the game.

“We’ve got the Arzanis and the Brunos that can cause havoc so I’ve got a little bit more of a defensive duty,” he told Fox Sports.

“But then the boss lets my brain do the work as well. When to go forward, when to pick the pockets in between.

“I’m loving it and I’m hoping to lift the trophy at the end of the season.”

Vidosic illustrated the in-game intelligence he brings to Warren Joyce’s side by masterminding City’s second goal at McDonald Jones.

The former Caltex Socceroo conspired with Michael Jakobsen to nullify Nikolai Topor-Stanley’s defensive presence at a corner, leaving Vidosic free to attack Luke Brattan’s cross against the undersized Ivan Vujica.

“Topor was marking Jakobsen quite tight so I said let’s drag him out of that space because I’ve got the advantage over Vujica,” Vidosic explained.

“Brattsy again with a good delivery and the rest was quite easy just to get up and put it in the back of the net.”
