United’s star man ‘confident’ of more goals after Caltex Socceroos experience

Craig Goodwin is “confident” his red-hot start to the Hyundai A-League season will continue after a stint with the Caltex Socceroos.

Goodwin linked up with Graham Arnold’s squad as they played friendlies against Korea Republic and Lebanon off the back of his blistering beginning to the 2018/19 Season.

The winger has scored eight goals in as many matches for Adelaide United this season, combining brilliant Hyundai A-League form with the starring role in the Reds’ FFA Cup glory.

And speaking ahead of United’s clash with Wellington Phoenix on Saturday, Goodwin said he is positive the good times will keep rolling.

“I’m confident that I can keep this up,” he told Adelaide United’s official website.

“Obviously it’s nice to be involved in the goals and assists and I think obviously, being a winger, that’s my main job to try and contribute to.

“Other than that, it’s about doing my role for the team, in the defensive duties and the pressing and everything like that.

“I’m confident in us as a group that we can keep it going.

“It’s about, for me, focusing on my job and what I need to do in each moment of the match and I know if I do that, then the goals and assists will come, so [I am] very confident.”

United dropped their last Hyundai A-League fixture to Perth Glory and Goodwin is aware it will not be easy to respond with all three points in New Zealand.

“Obviously we know Wellington in Wellington is a tough fixture but I have confidence in our squad and our team,” he said.

“If we do our roles and play the way we know we can, we can get the three points.

“It is a difficult place to come and play. It’s just, I think, a bit different.

“Maybe the travel helps with that, maybe the time difference.

“[But I’m] very confident in us and how we’re going as a squad.”

Goodwin also said his time with the Caltex Socceroos was a “nice experience”, with his next national team goal being “match minutes” and a spot at the AFC Asian Cup 2019.

But there are more immediate goals at play. Like three points in Wellington.
