Canberra United and the Brisbane Roar have played out a 1-1 draw in the round two Westfield W League match at McKellar Park on Saturday afternoon.
The first half was a tight albeit uneventful affair, while Brisbane were out-playing their more-fancied rivals, none of their attempts on goal really troubled United goalkeeper Lydia Williams.
That was until Tameka Butt hit Canberra where it hurts in the death of half time, running onto a lobbed pass, taking the ball on the bounce and putting it past Williams who was left away from her line in an unenviable position.
The second half was more open, as the Roar searched for a match winner and Canberra tried to claw their way back into the game.
Canberra celebrated what they thought was the goal they needed in the 55th minute when Cian Maciejewski volleyed an Ashleigh Sykes cross into the back of the net, but the ball was called back for offside.
As Brisbane-s chances started to dry up, Emily Van Egmond tried to single-handedly bring Canberra back into the game with two shots on target, one forcing a save from Casey Dumont.
Canberra then had their best chance of the game when Caitlin Munoz put in a dangerous ball into the box which beat Dumont but was just a touch too strong for Michelle Heyman running into an open goal.
Brisbane nearly had the match winner late in the game when Emily Gielnik crossed it in to an unmarked Butt who failed to connect well with her header and it sailed wide.
Minutes later Canberra breathed lift back into the match, Ellyse Perry received the ball from Hetman at the right side of the 18 yard box and put a controlled shot along the turf and into the bottom left corner.
It was a frantic finish and Canberra were coming home well with a series of shots denied in a goal mouth scramble, followed moments later by Munoz-s left foot strike which luckily for Dumond hit a defender.
In the end the draw was a fitting result, with the Roar showing they will again be a force to be reckoned with this year.
