Central Coast Mariners can seal their spot in the 2020/21 A-League Finals Series with a positive result in the F3 Derby against Newcastle Jets at Central Coast Stadium on Tuesday night.
Securing one point or more against the Jets would take the Mariners to 40 points and out of reach of Wellinton Phoenix, Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth Glory placed seventh to ninth on the A-League table. Perth are currently the only side who can catch the Mariners, trailing the third-placed side by six points with two games to play.
Alen Stajcic’s Mariners lost Ruon Tongyik to Socceroos duty this week, leaving Kye Rowles without his dependable partner in centre-back for the remainder of the campaign. The Mariners boss revealed he could also be without Daniel De Silva; the midfield magician is included in Central Coast’s extended squad but is under an injury cloud leading into the Tuesday-night clash.
Three young Jets are absent from Craig Deans’ squad for the F3 Derby with Luka Pršo, Connor O’Toole and Ramy Najjarine all taking part in the Olyroos’ current training camp in Spain, making it all the more difficult for a side without a win in 14 games to take confidence into their clash with the Mariners.
These two sides met in Matchweek 1 and 21 this season, with the Mariners taking six points from a pair of 1-0 victories. The Matchweek 1 clash at Central Coast Stadium was decided by a solitary Alou Kuol goal – the teenage forward was red-hot in the early stages of the campaign but hasn’t scored since April 1 in a 2-1 win over Adelaide United.
