Melbourne City and Newcastle Jets will round out the 2020/21 A-League regular season with a Matchweek 24 clash to be played behind closed doors at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Thursday night.
Melbourne’s current lockdown forced the fixture to be moved from AAMI Park on May 29 to a Thursday night clash in New South Wales.
The Jets need to take one point or more from their final game of the season to jump Melbourne Victory and avoid the wooden spoon. Craig Deans will oversee his last game as Newcastle boss before stepping down from the role of head coach with his side one point behind Victory with a far superior goal difference.
City, meanwhile, will look to build momentum heading into the Finals Series as the first-place finishers are without a win since lifting the Premiers Plate (L1, D1). Andrew Nabbout and Nathaniel Atkinson are named in Patrick Kisnorbo’s extended squad, but questions remain over how many minutes – if any – City’s returning stars get in their side’s last game before the Semi Finals.
Both City and Newcastle have one win apiece against each other in 2020/21. The Jets dealt Kisnorbo’s side a deflating 1-0 defeat in Matchweek 7 which sparked City’s club-record winning streak of six games as they surged to collect the Premiers Plate.
