Melbourne City will aim to consolidate its lead on top of the A-League table with a win over Newcastle Jets in the first game of Matchweek 19 kicking off at AAMI Park on Thursday, April 29.
After Central Coast fell to a 4-0 defeat to Brisbane Roar in the final game of Matchweek 18, Patrick Kisnorbo’s side have the chance to go four points clear of both the Mariners and Sky Blues with a win over the Jets.
Craig Deans’ Newcastle outfit bring a dismal record to Melbourne, having gone 10 games without a win. The Jets sit last on the A-League table leading into Tuesday night’s fixture against a City side out for revenge after Newcastle’s 1-0 win in the first meeting of the season between the two teams on February 7.
The Jets won 1-0 on that occasion thanks to a first-half Valentino Yuel finish. It was City’s third loss in a row – a run which Kisnorbo’s team followed with a club-record six-game winning streak, catapulting the Victorian side into Premiers Plate contention.
Star City striker had just three goals to his name after going goalless against the Jets in Matchweek 7, but has since scored in every game bar two, adding a further 16 goals in just 11 games to build a considerable gap between himself and Matt Derbyshire on top of the A-League Golden Boot leaderboard.
