Thompson set for rare milestone

Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson is set to become the first player to reach 200 appearances for the Hyundai A-League club on Friday night.

The 36-year-old, who has come off the bench in Melbourne Victory’s past two matches, joined the club as its inaugural marquee signing in 2005 before establishing himself as one of the biggest stars in the competition.

“In our code it’s very rare that you’re at one club for so long and I’m just grateful that Melbourne Victory has given me the opportunity to represent this club for so long,” Thompson said.

“Who knows, maybe tomorrow I won’t get a game, but to be in this position at such a huge club, it’s great.

“I’ve always stated this is the club I wanted to be at, where I want to stay and where I want to finish.”

With Queensland bracing for heavy rain and a cyclone in some parts over the next 24 hours, Melbourne Victory head coach Kevin Muscat said his side is ready for the conditions.

“From all reports it’s going to be really wet, but our preparation has been really good,” he said.

“Brisbane are on a good little run – they’ve won their last three and they’re pushing for finals – so they’ve got a little bit of confidence.

“But at the same time, we’ll go over there with a good week’s preparation under our belts looking to take three points.”
