Roar blow: marquee striker departs Brisbane

Brisbane Roar Football Club can confirm the departure of Italian marquee, Massimo Maccarone, following the completion of the 2017/18 campaign.

Brisbane Roar have confirmed veteran Italian marquee striker Massimo Maccarone has left the club.

Maccarone’s departure comes after Roar’s season came to an end last Friday night, following a 2-0 Elimination Final loss to Melbourne City.

It’s understood the 38-year-old was keen to remain in Brisbane for another year but coach John Aloisi opted not to offer him a new deal.

“I would like to thank the players, coaches and supporters for making me feel so welcome. I really enjoyed my time here in Australia,” Maccarone said on Tuesday.

“I am disappointed that we couldn’t make the Grand Final, but I leave with good memories.”

Maccarone joined Brisbane at the beginning of the 2017/18 Season after a long and decorated career, mostly in Italy’s Serie A.

In all, he played 30 games for the Roar in all competitions, scoring 10 goals.

He’s the second player to leave Roar following their finals defeat after the retirement of fellow veteran Fahid Ben Khalfallah.
