They are team-mates in the Foxtel A-League All Stars squad but there will be nothing friendly between David Williams and Bernie Ibini when they lock-horns in next Tuesday’s blockbuster Westfield FFA Cup clash.
Williams’ Melbourne City host Ibini’s Sydney FC in the glamour tie of match day three of the Westfield FFA Cup round of 32, with a spot in the last 16 on the line in Ballarat.
In other matches on Tuesday night, former NSL club Adelaide City host Western Sydney Wanderers FC, Mark Rudan’s Sydney United 58 take on FNQ FC Heat and Bentleigh Greens travel to Blacktown City.
But most eyes will be on Morshead Park as the new-look City make their first competitive appearance on Australian soil against Graham Arnold’s rebuilding Sky Blues.
“We’re definitely looking to get results,” Williams told www.theffacup.com.au
“I think the mentality in the club has changed, we’re approaching things a bit differently but we do have a squad the club has built that is going to be quite dangerous.
“I definitely want to be a part of the match but it probably depends on how much game time I’ve had here (for the All Stars).
“But any chance I have to play in the Sydney game I really hope I can because to be in the first FFA Cup game for Melbourne City will be a good memory.”
Ibini is also hoping the Sky Blues medical staff will allow him to line-up against City despite turning out for the All Stars just 48 hours earlier.
He has kept a close eye on all the changes at the Melbourne club and believes it’s only going to add to the game as well as the next Hyundai A-League season.
“Like us, they’ve had a lot of changes and have signed some amazing players,” Ibini said.
“To be able to play them first up is special. It would be great for us to have a good run in the Cup, especially being the first one.
“It’s been exciting so far. Football in Australia has wanted this [Cup] for a long time and to finally have it is something that’s very good.
“I was watching the coverage and flicking through all the games and I can’t wait to play.”
