Sydney women set for the Jets

After returning home empty handed from last week-s away game against Adelaide United, Sydney FC-s Westfield W-League side is determined not to let the points slip away this-weekend in its first outing at Campbelltown Stadium.

The Sky Blue women went down 3-2 against the Reds on the road, but Coach Alan Stajcic saw enough in his side to be confident of a strong comeback this Saturday against the Newcastle Jets.

“We probably should-ve got that equaliser in the last 10 or so minutes, there were 2 or 3 good chances to score but the fact that we kept pressing and kept fighting was really good,” said Stajcic.

“We didn-t give up and we kept fighting all the way to the end,” added stand-in skipper, Lisa Gilbert. “The result was unfortunate but our commitment was second to none.”

The team has enjoyed a good build up this week in preparation for the game against the Jets, with an emphasis on building-on the strong finish the women displayed against United.

“We-ve been trying to keep everyone healthy and everyone on track so we can put a healthy and fit team out this week,” the coach explained.

While confident, Sydney knows it-s in for a tough test against a team stacked with Matilda-s stars.

“They-ve got some big players so obviously they-re going to be dangerous in set plays in and around our box so we-ve been concentrating on those sorts of things,” said Gilbert.

Both sides will be itching to regain winning form and take maximum points when they meet at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday.

The game, which is also being televised live on the ABC, will be the first leg of a Westfield W-League double-header at the South West Sydney ground, with kick-off at 4pm.
