Sydney strikes lucky

Sydney FC striker John Aloisi has been cleared of any injury to his hamstring but the Sky Blues’ forward stocks have still suffered a hit as the club confirmed Mark Bridge will miss a month leading into the finals.

Sydney FC striker John Aloisi has been cleared of any injury to his hamstring but the Sky Blues’ forward stocks have still suffered a hit as the club confirmed Mark Bridge will miss a month leading into the finals.

Aloisi was forced off at half-time during Sydney’s 3-1 win over Newcastle on Sunday, the former Qantas Socceroo clutching his hamstring after scoring an equaliser just before the break.

However, Sydney declared in a statement on Monday afternoon that Aloisi had merely suffered a hamstring spasm and that no damage has been done.

The news will come as a massive boost to Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka, who may have been forced to play against Brisbane this weekend without two of his principal strikers and with Alex Brosque still regaining fitness after a groin complaint.

Bridge, though, will miss the next three to four matches after suffering a toe tendon injury on Friday at training.

But with only three matches of the regular season remaining, Bridge may be struggling to regain match fitness in time for the play-offs.

Bridge will now rest for the next ten days before beginning a rehabilitation program with the clubs medical staff.

“Mark saw foot specialist Kim Slater this morning. He will now undergo a rehabilitation program with the aim of him being available in three to four weeks,” Sydney FC Physiotherapist Stan Ivancic said.

“There was a tear in the plantar fascia ligament of his right big toe.”
