Sydney FC set to appeal Grant’s three-game ban

Sydney FC have confirmed they will be appealing Rhyan Grant’s three-game Hyundai A-League ban for his red card in Sunday’s clash with Melbourne City.

Grant was issued a straight red card for a lunging tackle on Melbourne City’s Nathaniel Atkinson midway through the first half of the Sky Blues’ 2-1 win in Kogarah.

The Hyundai A-League’s Independent Match Review Panel met on Monday and handed down a three-game ban to the Caltex Socceroos right-back.

But the Sky Blues released a statement late on Monday confirming they will be appealing “on the basis of fact and comparative tackles that have gone unpunished”.

“In addition, we would seek consideration for Rhyan Grant’s exemplary disciplinary record for both club and country,” the statement read.

“Rhyan has amassed close to 250 senior matches, largely as a defender, and has never received a red card.”

Grant has until 2pm (AEDT) on Tuesday, 31 December 2019 to lodge his appeal.

If unsuccessful Grant will miss Sydney’s games against Adelaide United (H), Newcastle Jets (A) and Melbourne Victory (A).

His next game in the Hyundai A-League would come in Round 17 against Brisbane Roar on Friday, January 31 at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.
