Sydney FC ranked among Australasia’s best sporting teams

Hyundai A-League Champions Sydney FC have been named among Australasia’s Best Sporting Teams over the past five years.

The annual ABST award recognises the strongest clubs across all sports in Australia and New Zealand on a rolling five-year period, and Steve Corica’s side have been ranked in fourth position.

In the qualifying period, the Sky Blues have lifted the Premiers Plate in 2016/17 and 2017/18, finished in second place twice, and been crowned Champions in 2017 and 2019.

Melbourne Storm of the National Rugby League, Kiwi Super Rugby side Crusaders, and women’s cricket side, New South Wales Breakers, are the only teams ranked above than the four-time Hyundai A-League champions.

A statistical model analyses and grades every elite club in Australia and New Zealand sport based on a range of factors, including win/loss record, finishing position and stability of competition.

The Sky Blues’ Westfield W-League side landed in 18th position, while Melbourne Victory’s men’s side came in 24th.

ROUND 7 REACTION: Le Fondre claims Barbarouses as Sydney’s own

“To see Sydney FC ranked above clubs such as current AFL Champions the Richmond Tigers and NRL Champions the Sydney Roosters shows how dominant and successful we are,” said Corica, in a statement on sydneyfc.com

“Winning has always been a part of Sydney FC since the first season and I’ve experienced that winning culture as both a player and Head Coach.

“It’s an honour to be ranked in the top five best sporting teams in Australasia and long may that success continue.”

The award, presented by Platinum Asset Management and Gain Line analytics, recognises the evolving sporting landscape, emerging competitions and the rise of women’s sport in 2019.
