Sydney FC are through to the Round of 16 in the AFC Champions League for the first time in the club’s history after Guangzhou Evergrande stunned Pohang Steelers in South Korea on Tuesday night.
Bottom-placed Guangzhou needed a win to keep their Round of 16 hopes alive and the reigning champions produced an impressive performance to record a comfortable 2-0 win at The Steelyard.
The result means Sydney FC (9 points) cannot finish any lower than second in Group H and will seal top spot with a win over Urawa Red Diamonds on Wednesday night at Allianz Stadium.
ACL: Sydney FC undaunted by ‘Manchester United of Japan’
Urawa outclassed the Sky Blues 2-0 in Japan back in February but Sydney have since recorded three consecutive wins to sit two points above the J-League outfit.
Should Graham Arnold’s side finish first they will face the second placed side from Group F in the Round of 16, currently Chinese outfit Shandong Luneng.
