Sydney FC playmaker set for familiar foe

Sydney FC midfielder Milos Dimitrijevic has sounded a warning to the Sky Blues’ lineup ahead of their clash against the Jets as he prepares to encounter a former teammate at Hunter Stadium on Saturday.

Jets import Milos Trifunovic spent a year with Dimitrijevic at Red Star Belgrade in 2011, and the Sky Blues’ number eight has urged his defenders to err on the side of caution as he said he played a part in his fellow Serbian’s decision to play in the Hyundai A-League.

“I know him [Trifunovic] from Red Star, he’s a very good striker, good player so we’ll need to be careful with him,” Dimitrijevic said.

“We know each other very good, we trained this pre-season before I came back here, we trained together in Serbia, so I can’t wait to see him again.

“We spoke a lot in preseason [about Australia] and I told him everything about the A-League and I think it helped him to make his choice and to come to Newcastle.

“I think Serbian players are very good. I’m sure he will do very well this season and he will be very important for Newcastle.”

Following a full season at the Sky Blues, Dimitrijevic said he’s feeling better than ever as he said the squad depth at Sydney FC this season is pushing him to perform at his peak week in week out.

“We are happy with the start, of course it’s better when you win and take three points but I think we had a good game. We have to work very hard every training to improve and I’m sure we will be better and better.

“I feel much better now at this moment than last year because last year it was my first preseason,” he said.

“Before that I didn’t play for one year so at this moment I’ve had one full season behind me and I feel much better and I am confident for this season.

“Now I must play good to keep my spot also, because there are very good new young players,” he continued.

“I’m happy to play with Brandon, also Mickael, they are very good players. I think it’s important for the team to have all this strong squad.

“Every player has to work harder at training to keep his spot and to play so it’s very good to have this strong squad for everyone.”
