Sydney have moved to counter suggestions star signing Alessandro Del Piero could be on his way out of the club, with discussions over a contract extension due to start in the coming weeks.
The Sky Blues have been the subject of criticism this week after it was revealed the club had not yet moved to activate the second year of their marquee man-s $4 million contract, even after the dramatic impact he had on the club, on and off the field.
But on Tuesday the club said the Italian remained part of their long-term plans and that contract discussions would begin in the near future.
“We have always viewed Alessandro Del Piero-s time here at Sydney FC as a long term project and this was reaffirmed at our monthly board meeting early this week,” a spokesman said.
“We would like for Alessandro to remain at Sydney FC next season and we will also begin talking to him about opportunities beyond 2014.
“There are a number of details yet to be worked through with Alessandro-s management regarding next season and these discussions will take place over the coming weeks”.
