Sydney FC thrashed Adelaide United 6-0 in a blistering display of attacking football at the SFS on Sunday to maintain pressure on the top two.
Up 3-0 at the break the home side didn’t take their foot off the accelerator with three more goals to heap the misery on the visiting Reds.
Matildas striker Sarah Walsh lead the way with two goals – including one that could be a contender for goal of the season.
Other scorers included Alesha Clifford, Leena Khamis, Michelle Carney and Catherine Cannulli.
The result was never in doubt after Clifford scored her first ever Westfield W-League goal on five minutes after she picked up a rebound from a Heather Garriock free kick to stroke home the first of the day.
Walsh then had the fans on their feet with a goal of sublime class. On 22 minutes she latched onto a bouncing through ball and struck it beautifully from 25yds out. It looped over the head of Reds keeper Sian McLaren to bust the net.
And the tigerish Matildas forward made it three seven minutes later after another through ball saw her collide with the United keeper and she reacted first to the spilt ball to coolly stroke home.
Adelaide simply had no answer to the movement of Sydney’s front two of Walsh and Khamis with the promptings of Matildas star Heather Garriock just in behind causing constant headaches for the overworked Reds.
The second half continued very much as it had finished with Sydney’s mobility and passing game tearing the Reds to shreds.
Adelaide through Rachael Quigley and Karina Roweth briefly threatened down the right but a beautifully taken header from Khamis on 59 minutes gave the sky blues a four goal buffer.
On a warm day, the home side continued to press and substitute Carney’s header from a corner and Cannulli’s calm finish in the box rounded out a fantastic day for the Sydney women.
Sydney FC now moves into the third on the ladder ahead of next week’s blockbuster with four placed Melbourne Victory.
