Sydney Derby proposal for ANZ Stadium

One out of the three regular season Sydney derby matches – now regarded the hottest sporting ticket in town – could be moved to ANZ Stadium from next season.

A report in Tuesday’s Sydney Morning Herald newspaper revealed Football Federation Australia in talks with both Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers FC about the proposal.

The Wanderers and Sky Blues play each other three times a season, with FFA chief executive David Gallop hoping they can agree to host one match each, with the third to be played at ANZ Stadium at Homebush.

While the FFA can’t make either club change their home fixture to a neutral venue, they are keen to nut out a deal that would suit both parties.

A fixture at ANZ Stadium has the potential to draw up to 70,000 people, which could enable both clubs to split a $500,000 kitty.

With more than 41,000 packing Allianz Stadium in October – a regular season crowd record for the venue of any code – there is huge demand for tickets in this fierce and growing rivalry.

More than 30,000 fans are going to miss out on Saturday night’s eighth installment of the Sydney derby at Pirtek Stadium, with the Wanderers preferring to play in front of around 20,000 fans at a hostile ‘Wanderland’ rather than shift to Homebush.

‘‘If we’re leaving people outside the stadium or they are unable to get a ticket, then we need to be looking at making sure they can see the game and maximise the potential that the game creates,’’ Gallop said.

‘‘Subject to their contractual commitments, the [Wanderers] are also keen to explore those options.

“It’s certainly something we need to explore and make sure that both clubs’ financial positions are protected. ANZ obviously has the capacity to allow more fans to see the games and it is something we are keen to look carefully at.’’

Saturday night’s derby at Pirtek Stadium was sold out weeks ago and is a huge clash for both sides. The Wanderers are still searching for their first win of the campaign while Sydney FC are unbeaten and keen to remain near the summit of the Hyundai A-League ladder.
