Sunday preview: A-League triple-header, May 16

There’ll be three times the action on Sunday, May 16, as six Finals Series aspirants get set for battle in an unmissable A-League triple-header.

The congested top six continues to change appearance with the passing of every A-League fixture, as ten sides look to squeeze into the six spots available in the 2020/21 A-League Finals Series.

The action gets underway at AAMI Park on Sunday afternoon, when Wellington Phoenix travel to face Melbourne City. Adelaide United will then host Brisbane Roar at Coopers Stadium before Perth Glory welcome Western Sydney Wanderers to HBF Park in the final game of the day.

Wellington will contend with the league-leading City without star man Ulises Dávila, who will miss the battle between ninth and first through injury. The Phoenix come up against a side looking to notch a ninth consecutive home victory at AAMI Park to take another step toward clinching a club-first Premiers Plate.

Wellington can jump Western United into eighth on the A-League table with a win, drawing to within one point of both Western Sydney (seventh) and the Roar (sixth) before the two sides play their respective Sunday fixtures.

City’s chances of securing three points are boosted by Dávila’s absence, but hindered by an adductor injury suffered by star forward Andrew Nabbout in his side’s most recent win over Adelaide United.

The Reds will host Brisbane in the second Sunday fixture looking to win for the first time in six games. The Roar can jump above their Sunday opponents with a win to go one point behind both Sydney FC and Macarthur FC on 35 points apiece.

It’s the first of four fixtures for Warren Moon’s Roar in the space of 14 days as the Roar continue to make up their games in hand. Brisbane have lost just once in nine games and last faced the Reds in Matchweek 6 when Dylan Wenzel-Halls bagged a brace in a 3-1 win at Moreton Daily Stadium.

Western Sydney travel to HBF Park to face Perth in the final game on Sunday, May 16, after reviving their Finals Series charge with back-to-back wins. A 3-2 victory over Sydney FC preceded a massive 5-0 win against Western United last time out which sent the Wanderers rolling into Matchweek 21 – but the away side will face a stern test against a Glory outfit with successive wins of their own.

Perth are tenth on the A-League table and will begin the day six points off the top six. Richard Garcia’s side have six fixtures remaining this season, and can keep the slim chance of reaching the Finals Series alive with a positive result against Western Sydney.
