Sunday Night Football preview: Melbourne Victory v Sydney FC

Melbourne Victory are looking to build on a confidence-boosting result last week as they prepare to face Big Blue rivals Sydney FC at AAMI Park.

Grant Brebner’s bottom-the-ladder strugglers halted a four-match losing streak with a 1-1 draw against the table-topping Central Coast Mariners to lift some of the gloom ahead of Sunday’s clash with the Sky Blues.

Callum McManaman’s 20th-minute strike was cancelled out by Marco Ureña’s equaliser in Gosford, leaving Victory unable to add to their two wins in 13 games during a testing first half of the 2020/21 campaign.

Steve Corica’s team are also searching for a return to winning ways, having fallen 1-0 against fast-rising Adelaide United in Game Week 14 as Craig Goodwin’s late penalty left the Harbour City outfit clinging on to their top-six place.

After coming off their bye week with a 1-1 draw on the road against Perth Glory, the defending Premiers have not claimed a three-point haul since March 12 and they will be eager to tighten their grip on the Finals Series spot as the competition crosses the mid-point of the season.

In what is sure to be a highly-charged atmosphere in the Victorian capital, the form book will be thrown out of the window as the A-League’s two most successful clubs once again battle for Big Blue bragging rights after Sydney swept the three-match series last season.
