The latest instalment in one of the A-League’s newest rivalries is set to go down at WIN Stadium on Sunday, April 11, as Wellington Phoenix host Western United.
Mark Rudan takes his United outfit to face his former side Wellington for the fourth time after three entertaining meetings between the two teams in the 2019/20 campaign. United won their first A-League matchup with the Phoenix before losing twice to Ufuk Talay’s team later in the season.
The Green and Black are on the rise in 2020/21 after two wins in Matchweek 15 sent United to within four points of Western Sydney Wanderers, currently occupying sixth spot on the table.
Having played the equal-least amount of games (13) of any side in the league, United have the opportunity to rise up the standings if that winning run continues. But Wellington will be eager as ever to rein in their opponent’s optimism with a win at WIN Stadium.
Wellington have lost two in a row to sit tenth on the A-League table. They took the fight to Melbourne City in Matchweek 15, going down by just one goal in an entertaining 3-2 affair. Defender Tim Payne said post-match that although the performances are there, his side’s positive intentions will mean nothing without the points on the board to match.
