Sunday football preview: Melbourne Derby, June 6

A key duo return for Melbourne Victory as Steve Kean’s side look to leave their recent Melbourne Derby horrors behind with a win over Melbourne City at AAMI Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Premiers have torn Victory apart in a pair of Melbourne Derby fixtures so far this season, winning 6-0 in Matchweek 11 before going one better with a 7-0 triumph in Matchweek 17 to extended their current winning streak over Victory to three games.

Robbie Kruse and Nick Ansell return to the Victory squad preparing to meet a City side missing Jamie Maclaren, Connor Metcalfe and Curtis Good on Socceroos duty. Craig Noone, Scott Jamieson and Rostyn Griffiths are a key trio returning for City after missing their side’s disappointing 3-0 loss to Brisbane Roar last time out.

Victory come into the Melbourne Derby high on confidence after destroying Western United 6-1 in their last A-League fixture. Elvis Kamsoba scored a brace and Ben Folami starred in attack as Kean’s side ended their five-game losing streak in some style.

It’s the last A-League fixture Kean will oversee as interim head coach of Victory, with Tony Popovic waiting in the wings to takeover in the 2021/22 campaign. Getting one back over their local rivals will help Victory end the current campaign on a high as the club prepares to head into a new era under their incoming boss.
