Sunday football preview: A-League, May 9

Brisbane Roar have been gifted the opportunity to climb into second spot on the A-League table with a win over Melbourne City in the first of two A-League games on Sunday, May 9.

The Roar begin the day in seventh spot on the table but can jump above five teams into second with a win. Just two points separate seventh from second as a string of recent draws have tightened the standings.

But to take outright ownership of second spot, Brisbane will need to go through a City side with just one loss in 13 games steaming ahead on top of the A-League table.

Andrew Nabbout returns to the City squad after missing out on his side’s 3-1 win over Perth Glory last time out. The league-leaders can pull nine points clear on top of the A-League table with a second win of the season over Brisbane, after beating the Roar 1-0 in Matchweek 1.

Perth Glory host Melbourne Victory in the second Sunday game, kicking off at HBF Park at 6.10pm AEST. Perth’s six-game winless run has left Richard Garcia’s side sitting precariously in tenth spot on the A-League table.

The West Australian outfit have dropped out of Finals Series contention of late, but could reinvigorate the push for a spot in the top six with a win over Victory.

Interim Victory boss Steve Kean has overseen one win, one draw and two losses throughout his time in charge of the Navy Blue. Storm Roux returns from suspension for Kean’s side along with Ben Folami, who missed out in Matchweek 19 through injury.

These two sides last met in Matchweek 5, when Perth squandered a one-goal lead to allow former Glory man Jake Brimmer to score an unlikely double to turn the tables at AAMI Park.
