Simon Storey believes North Queensland Fury will be around next season and he wants to continue to be a part of one of the most exciting Hyundai A–League teams around although their results may not reflect it.
With seven games to go in their 2010/2011 campaign, the tenth placed North Queensland Fury have an outside chance of making the finals, it is still mathematically possible and Storey says they will fight until the end.
“Mathematically it’s still definitely a possibility if we get good results. The League is tight to say the least. It just depends on your run of games on the home stretch I guess,” Storey said.
“Until it’s impossible we will keep on fighting.”
It is clear that Storey’s passion to fight is fuelled by his love for the club and North Queensland.
“I’ve loved it. It’s been brilliant. It’s a great club here with really good people,” he said.
“North Queensland has been a fantastic place to move to and has a great community feel. I have thoroughly enjoyed it.”
On top of the pressure of making the finals, every single player including Storey has to weigh up their future as their club’s future is still uncertain.
“We’re all in the same boat waiting to see what happens. It would be naive to think that it doesn’t sit in the back of the boys’ heads,” he said.
“Obviously we will go out and try to play every week as it comes and keep our minds stuck on the football.”
“If the Fury stay around that would be fantastic but if not we will have to try and sort something else out.”
Storey would like to stay in the Hyundai A-League but heading overseas is a possibility with previous experience in the Scottish Football League and future aspirations to play in Asia.
However Storey is confident the club will be around next season and he remains hopeful enough to not to make the call about where he will play next season until he knows whether or not the Fury will survive.
“I’m very confident the Fury will be around next season,” he said.
Even before the club’s future has been decided, Storey believes it’s a shame they will not have the same team next year to work towards a premiership.
“It’s unfortunate we haven’t been given the chance to build from this year with the players that we have into next year,” he said.
“We’ve lost a few boys to other teams but that’s the scenario we’re in at the moment,” he said.
Storey has already tasted premiership victory in front of family and friends with Melbourne Victory back in 2007 but one of his career goals is to get another.”
“Being a Melbourne boy and having my parents, sister and the rest of my family and friends there to watch the Victory win a premiership was fantastic and something I will always remember and cherish.”
Storey will return to his hometown this Sunday for the Fury’s must win clash with Melbourne Heart.
In their last clash the Heart came away with a 3-2 win at Dairy Farmers Stadium last month.
“Obviously they played really well against us last game in Townsville and they tucked away their chances,” Storey said.
“It will be a tough game but hopefully we will go really well.”
