Stats news: Hyundai A-League set for goals record

If the first six rounds are any gauge, the Hyundai A-League 2016/17 Season will be the most prolific for goals scored, compared to the last four years. Opta Data have all the stats.

Already this season we’ve seen 92 goals scored, at an average of more than three per match.

The tally is more than any at the same stage of any of the previous four seasons.

High-flying Sydney FC have been a major reason behind this season’s surge, with their 17 a new Hyundai A-League record after six matches.

It’s a huge turnaround for Graham Arnold’s side, who only managed eight goals at the same point in both the previous two campaigns.

Melbourne clubs City and Victory have been the most consistent when it comes to goals over the last few seasons.

Both have managed to reach double figures in the opening six weeks in each of the last three seasons, with no other club managing it more than once in that time.

Of course, scoring a stack of goals now doesn’t always translate to success at the end of the season, as champions Adelaide United have proved.

The Reds averaged just a goal a game in the first six rounds of last season and again have managed only six at the same point this campaign.

While it will give Adelaide fans hope of another incredible turnaround, Gui Amor’s side certainly bucked the trend to achieve their double-success in the 2015/16 Season.

The two seasons prior to that, the championship winners both scored in excess of 10 goals in the first six games.

Brisbane Roar notched 11 in the 2013/14 Season, while Victory netted 14 times the following year.

Wellington Phoenix have been the slowest starters in 2016/17, with just five so far after going the opening three weeks without finding the net.

The 2013/14 Season was easily the worst when it came to goals in the first six rounds, with only 66 across the 30 matches in that campaign, 26 short of where we are right now.

Which is another reason why the fans are loving the 2016/17 Season.
