Sydney FC made it back-to-back wins in the Westfield W-League, edging Melbourne Victory 2-1 on Sunday.
Alanna Kennedy looped a header onto the crossbar for Sydney before Natasha Dowie went close for the hosts at Lakeside Stadium, curling an effort just wide.
Dowie then hit the side netting as Victory made a bright start, and Christine Nairn fired over from an angle.
But Kennedy would open the scoring in the 17th minute, her 20-yard free-kick going in via the crossbar despite the best efforts of Bianca Henninger.
Victory pushed and Nairn had a long-range effort palmed away by Shamiran Khamis before Sydney doubled its lead.
A Georgia Yeoman-Dale cutback was tapped in by Remy Siemsen to make it 2-0.
MelindaJ Barbieri was the next to go close for Victory, which started the second half well and had Dowie hit the side netting again after rounding Khamis.
Kennedy rattled the crossbar with a free-kick before Dowie scored her third goal of the season, taking down a long Laura Spiranovic throw before poking in.
Dowie almost secured a draw for Victory but shot wide after a brilliant turn in the area.
Victory faces City in a Derby clash next week, while the Sky Blues host Adelaide United.
