Simon: City confident of upsetting Westfield W-League Premiers Brisbane

Kyah Simon believes Melbourne City’s Westfield W-League finals track record makes them a dangerous opponent and says they are going into Sunday’s semi-final against Brisbane Roar in a confident mood.

City have won the last two Westfield W-League Championships but only qualified for the finals this season thanks to a final round 3-0 win over Newcastle Jets.

Their reward for finishing fourth is a winner-takes-all clash with Premiers Brisbane at Perry Park on Sunday.

While City will start the clash as underdogs against Roar, Simon has no doubt City have the ingredients to make it through to a third straight Westfield W-League decider.

“City’s had a great track record in the last couple of years and it’s a privilege for me to be part of such a successful club,” Simon said.

“I’m hoping I can contribute to us winning the championship three years in a row, but Brisbane are a top side and no matter who you face in finals football, it’s going to be a competitive match.

“We’ve got two obstacles to overcome — Brisbane this weekend and then the grand final the week after.

“We’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves but we’re going in full of confidence.”

Simon knows what it takes to have success in the Westfield W-League, having lifted the trophy with former club Sydney FC.

Melbourne City

It’s a feeling she is desperate to have again in her first season under Patrick Kisnorbo at City.

“Every time I play in the W-League I’m playing to hopefully hold up that trophy at the end of the season,” the Westfield Matildas attacker said.

“Not many players get to experience that – I have previously with Sydney FC and there’s no better feeling than reaping the benefits from all your hard work and dedication and commitment, from every player in the squad and the club as well.”

Simon has been one of City’s most consistent performers this season, leading the Westfield W-League in chances created (42) and crosses (89).

She was also equal third in the competition for assists with four, while her 40 shots at goal was also third most in the league.
