Signing news: Tottenham academy product joins Mariners as Jets snare attacking pair

CENTRAL Coast Mariners have secured the services of Japanese midfielder Cy Goddard on a two-year deal.

Born in London, Goddard rose through the ranks at English club Tottenham Hotspur to feature for Spurs’ U16, U18, U21 and U23 sides. In 2015 midfielder broke into the club’s U21 outfit as an 18-year-old. A youth contract was logically handed to the young prospect after his impressive rise, but in 2017 Goddard departed the club without making an appearance for the senior team.

Goddard spent the best part of a year without a club before Serie B club Benevento swooped in to sign the 21-year-old on a three-year deal. A loan move to Cypriot football team Pafos FC for the 2019/20 season was to follow for Goddard, who would then go back out on loan the season after to Indian Super League outfit Mumbai City FC.

Playing with Sydney FC striker Adam Le Fondre, Goddard helped guide Mumbai City FC to the 2020/21 ISL title.

Mariners boss Nick Montgomery says Goddard has the characteristics to fit right in at the club and in the A-League in 2021/22.

“I have been in consultation with Cy many times since we first indicated our interest in bringing him to the Coast, and in every conversation, he has impressed me with both his character and his positive mindset,” Montgomery said.

“…Cy is a very talented footballer and one who I think will look right at home in the A-League.”

Brazilian Penha joins Jets in loan deal as Silvera returns Down Under

Newcastle Jets boss Arthur Papas continues to strengthen his squad ahead of the 2021/22 season, adding Club Atlético Mineiro (CAM) midfielder Daniel Penha and former Mariners youngster Samuel Silvera to his ranks on respective loan deals.

Plying his trade for Brazilian Série B side Confiança in 2021, Penha scored three goals, registered one assist and created 32 chances in 18 games before the completion of his loan stint.

The creative midfielder will bring a set-piece threat to the Jets, where Papas says Penha’s qualities and style of play make the Brazilian a perfect fit at the A-League outfit.

“We are delighted to welcome to Daniel Penha to Newcastle Jets,” Papas told the club website.

“He is an exciting talent. Having known about Daniel for some time and seen his growth over the course of 2021, his style and our style are very aligned. I am confident our supporters will appreciate his qualities.”

Silvera returns to Australia on loan from Portuguese club Pacos de Ferreira to join Penha at the Jets in 2021/22.

The 20-year-old made 21 appearances for Central Coast before signing for his parent club in 2020, heading out for a pair of loan spells at Liga Portugal 2 side Casa Pia Atlético Clube  and A.D. Sanjoanense in 2021.

“We’re very pleased to have secured Sam for the upcoming season,” Papas told the club website.

“He naturally prefers playing as a right winger but is also comfortable on the left or through the centre and adds a lot of pace and creativity to our attack.”

As Penha and Silvera put pen to paper on loan moves to the Jets, Joey Champness departs to sign with Turkish Süper Lig club Giresunspor.

Champness spent the 2020/21 A-league campaign on loan from the Jets at Brisbane Roar, notching two goals and two assists in 24 appearances.

Newcastle are currently finalising a transfer fee to formalise Champness’ move to the Süper Lig outfit.
