Signing news: Babalj joins Brisbane on injury replacement deal

Eli Babalj has signed for Brisbane Roar as an injury replacement player for the rest of the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 season.

Babalj, 27, returns to the Australian top flight after a stint in the Indian Super League with Amar Tomar Kolkata.

The former Melbourne Heart (City) and Adelaide United man said he’s aiming to make an impact for the Queenslanders after a successful trial with the club.

“I’ve really enjoyed training with the group. Everyone has been welcoming and I’m looking forward to contributing to the team,” Babalj told Brisbane’s official website.

“I’m looking forward to playing back in my home country, in a league I know well and playing for the Brisbane Roar.”

Babalj scored 11 goals in 35 appearances for Melbourne Heart before moving to Serbian powerhouse Red Star Belgrade in 2012.

But a run of injury misfortune ever since has shackled the talented striker, who in the same year scored a brace for the Caltex Socceroos.
