Shot-stopper extends Sydney FC stay

Sydney FC has re-signed goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic on a new two year contract keeping the shot stopper at the club until the end of the 2017-18 season.

The 28 year old has been one of the Sky Blues’ standout players this season with seven clean sheets, the second highest of any Hyundai A-League goalkeeper.

Janjetovic first joined the club at the start of the 2012-13 season, winning his first start in round nine against Melbourne Heart.  Since then the keeper has missed just three games and has been ever present over the last three seasons.

“It feels extremely good to re-sign and represent the club who gave me my chance in football for another two years,” Janjetovic said.

“Sydney FC feels like a family to me and I can’t imagine playing for any other club.  I’ve been here almost four years and feel proud to be representing this city and our fantastic members.  They are a huge reason why I wanted to re-sign.

“We also have a fantastic base from which to build in the next few years, with a lot of young talent coming through from the Sydney FC Academy.

“Hopefully we will have a strong finish which we can carry into the latter stages of the AFC Champions League,” he concluded.

Janjetovic has played 80 consecutive Hyundai A-League games for the Sky Blues, which is a club record, and Head Coach Graham Arnold believes keeping him is a really great coup for the club.

“Vedran has been one of our best this season and I’m very pleased we will have him on board for the next two years,” said Arnold.

“It’s no secret how highly regarded he is among other coaches in the Hyundai A-League and he was offered deals elsewhere, however he has remained loyal to the club who have helped his progress from a young age.

“I’ve no doubt his best years are still ahead of him and under the tuition of John Crawley, the best goalkeeping coach in the country, I’ve no doubt he will fulfil his potential.”

Janjetovic began his career as part of Sydney FC’s inaugural Championship winning National Youth League squad in 2009 before re-joining the Sky Blues in 2012 following three years with Sydney United.
