A highly impressed Mark Schwarzer has thrown his support behind Riley McGree to claim the Puskas Award when The Best FIFA Football Awards are held early Tuesday morning (AEST).
McGree is in the running to join Neymar and Zlatan Ibrahimovic as players to have scooped the prestigious accolade following his outrageous scorpion kick in last season’s Hyundai A-League Finals Series.
The Melbourne City midfielder is attempting to beat the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to this year’s honour, voting for which remains open until the commencement of the awards show.

Socceroos great Schwarzer, who made a career out of stopping potential Puskas Award winners, is delighted to see a compatriot in with a genuine chance.
“To have someone nominated from Australia’s top domestic league is a great accomplishment,” Schwarzer said.
“It was a phenomenal goal. Probably a once-in-a-lifetime goal from him [but] who’s to say it won’t ever happen again? You never know.
“It will take some beating, that type of goal.
“[I’m] very, very proud there’s an Australian involved in the nominations.”
McGree is one of ten contenders to take home trophy, with strikes from Mohamed Salah, Gareth Bale and Benjamin Pavard also in the equation.
