New Sydney FC signing Sasa Ognenovski’s first game back in the Hyundai A-League could come against his former club on Saturday night.
Fate or just an uncanny coincidence – whatever you call it, the possibility that new Sydney FC signing Sasa Ognenovski-s first game for the Sky Blues could come against Adelaide United on Saturday night gives the game at Allianz Stadium added fascination.
Ognenovski may have spent just a year with the Reds, but it was a year that launched a phenomenal period in his career and saw him make a successful move to one of Asia-s biggest clubs. Now he returns to the Hyundai A-League for the first time since his Asian sojourn having also played a significant role in the Socceroos- World Cup qualification.
But after time at Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United, this time around he will line up for Sydney FC with a likelihood that he could feature this weekend against the Reds.
Regardless of the fact that Eugene Galekovic and Cassio are the only players still at the Reds from the time Ognenovski was at the club, it would be almost fitting that the 34 year olds first game back in the Hyundai A-League is against his last Australian suitors, a side that proved to be the stepping stone to his lucrative stint in Asia and led to him representing his country.
Ognenovski was part of the Reds- squad that competed in the FIFA Club World Cup and finished runners-up in the 2008 AFC Champions League in 2008, before he went one better in 2010 as he led Seongnam to the title while also being named the Asian Player of the Year.
He may be forever grateful to Adelaide United but he will be hoping to help his new club contribute to the Reds- downfall as he becomes yet another player to return to play in the Hyundai A-League after time abroad.
