Champions re-sign star import for third season: ‘Feels like home’

Melbourne City have re-signed experienced defender Samuel Souprayen on a one-season contract, the club confirmed.

The French centre-back has made 51 appearances for City across his first two seasons at the club.

The import defender was a key figure in head coach Aurelio Vidmar’s starting XI in 2024-25 but a calf injury suffered in May prevented Souprayen from contributing to City’s charge to the Isuzu UTE A-League Championship title.

Speaking after the confirmation of his new one-season contract, Souprayen said the disappointment of missing out on the Championship push will fuel his ambition to chase more silverware next term.

“Since my arrival, Melbourne City has felt like home, and I’m excited to return for another season with the club,” Souprayen said.

“While it was disappointing not to be out on the pitch with my teammates for the Grand Final, I’m incredibly proud of everything we achieved this season and will be doing everything I can to help us reach even greater heights next season.”

City director of football Michael Petrillo added: “Samuel has been a reliable and hugely important part of our defence over the past two seasons, so we’re pleased to have him back at the Club for another year.

“We’re expecting to see even more young players involved in our first team next season, so the experience and leadership of players like Samuel will be crucial as we look to build on this year’s success.”
