Sam Kerr makes long-awaited return to the Westfield W-League

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past two months, you may remember this weekend marks the return of superstar Sam Kerr to the Westfield W-League.

The 25-year-old is primed to start in Perth Glory’s Round 2 clash against Canberra United at McKellar Park on Sunday, with Bobby Despotovski’s team looking to claim their first win of the season.

Canberra won’t be welcoming Kerr with open arms, though. The last time these two faced off, Kerr grabbed a first-half hat-trick in an entertaining 4-4 draw.

Bringing the attention back to this season, Perth came close to a vital win over Brisbane in Round 1, but Alyssa Mautz’s 54th-minute strike was cancelled out by a late Carson Pickett equaliser. One gets the feeling that with the presence of Kerr in the lineup, Perth have that extra bit of quality which can win them tight games.

Kerr’s return to Perth comes after the Westfield Matildas forward courted much interest from European clubs, including England’s Chelsea and FC Barcelona from Spain.

She becomes the first ever female marquee player to play in the Westfield W-League, testament to the quality she brings to the game on and off the pitch.

Kerr’s return means she has the opportunity to once more link up Rachel Hill at Glory. Kerr and the American appeared to develop a telepathic understanding in the 2017/18 Season, as they scored 22 goals between them. 13 of those goals came from Sam Kerr, which earned the Fremantle-born star her first ever Westfield W-League Golden Boot.

Amazingly, that wasn’t Kerr’s only Golden Boot for 2018. She has won the award for the past two seasons in the United States’ NWSL, both with Sky Blue FC and Chicago Red Stars. 16 goals in 19 games for the 2018 Season is a fair return, so much so that last season Kerr became the first ever player to reach 50 goals in the NWSL.

Kerr also has 40 goals for Perth Glory, and 53 overall in the Westfield W-League. Add to that her 26 goals for the Westfield Matildas, and it’s safe to say Perth have pulled off an amazing job in securing Kerr’s services for the Westfield W-League 2018/19 Season.
