Salvachua says improving Victory will take time

New Melbourne Victory coach Carlos Salvachua says he needs time on the training pitch to stamp his mark on the team.

Victory fell to a 1-0 defeat in their Original Rivalry clash against Adelaide United in the Spanish coach’s first game in the dugout on Friday.

Ben Halloran scored the decisive goal on 32 minutes at Coopers Stadium after goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas spilled a Riley McGree shot as the visitors struggled to settle in a disjointed first half display.

Elvis Kamsoba spurned a good chance to net his first Hyundai A-League goal and equalise in an improved second-half for Victory, but Salvachua insists he can only put his imprint on the team with more time on the paddock.

“We need to work, we need to train,” Salvachua said

“We need time, we need more sessions, we need time to build up the team.

“The training is really important for my philosophy.”

Victory host Bali United on Tuesday night in the AFC Champions League second preliminary round, before returning to AAMI Park four days later for the Big Blue against league leaders Sydney FC.

“These are tough moments but I think we have enough quality and enough players to keep going,” added Salvachua.

Reflecting on the match, he said: “We are not happy with the result and the performance in the first half was not good enough.

“For me we have to fix some things. In the second half we had a lot of chances, some of these were clear.

“We have be more protagonist to win the games like in the second half.”

The Reds snapped a four-game losing streak with the triumph over their original rivals and coach Gertjan Verbeek praised his side for making the necessary adjustments to win the game.

“They had a little bit different system than under the former coach,” he said.

“But we solved it ourselves. That was very good for the team. We made a good goal and made more opportunities.

“You go into the second half and you know they will come, because they are 1-0 behind.

“Then we had to defend. We did that with a lot of energy.”
