Round 9 preview: Sydney FC v Adelaide United

Sydney FC face a stern test of their metal when in-form Adelaide United travel to Cromer Park intent on dealing the Sky Blues successive Westfield W-League defeats on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds moved into third on the Westfield W-League table after edging top-four rivals Canberra United 2-1 in Round 8. The result came soon after Brisbane Roar handed the Sky Blues a first defeat for the season, and an emphatic one at that: a 4-1 loss at the hands of the Roar gave Sydney a wake-up call after winning six successive games to begin the 2020/21 campaign.

The Sky Blues remain in top spot on the table but with the undefeated Roar breathing down their necks a win over Adelaide will be imperative to Ante Juric’s side retaining the ascendancy in the race for the 2020/21 Premiers Plate. But it won’t be easy against the Reds, who are sniffing a club-first Finals Series appearance this season.
