Round 9 preview: Newcastle Jets v Melbourne Victory

Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory resume battle on Saturday afternoon, after an entertaining battle unfolded when the two sides last featured in the 2020/21 Westfield W-League campaign.

Melbourne edged Newcastle in a 4-2 thriller on February 7 in Round 7 – the last time either side played before a Round 8 bye. Victory raced to a 3-0 lead before the Jets fought back in the second half, scoring two goals to move within sight of a point before Melina Ayres netted in the 81st minute to wrap up the win for Victory.

The result kept Melbourne in touching distance of the top four. Victory currently sit in fifth position on the Westfield W-League table with 10 points from six games, just one point behind Canberra United in fourth and three points behind Adelaide United in third.

Newcastle sit just one place below Victory on the table, but with a six-point gap between the two teams there’s considerable distance for the Jets to make up if they are to keep the slim chance of Finals Series football alive.
